Mana Bahadur Bishwakarma
Residents of Kalikot have been compelled to travel dangerously for years owing to the non-construction of the bridge across the Phugad River in the Karnali Corridor due to the neglect of the administration and stakeholders.
Passengers are having difficulty crossing the Phugad River due to an increase in the volume of water. Citizens complain that they have to carry motorcycles and pull other vehicles across, after the river swept away the Bailey bridge and the suspension bridge owing to constant rains in the year 2078.
Locals claim that they must cross the river, putting their lives at risk.
The construction of the bridge has been delayed because of the need to source building materials from outside the district, the Nepali Army stated.
The Nepali Army, which was entrusted with the construction of the corridor without building the bridge, has handed it over to the road department.
Locals are protesting and asking about the whereabouts of the local government. Bridges built on such rivers instead of making separate plans based on needs and accessibility would be fruitful, a local resident, Amraj Baral, complained.
Even after three years since the collapse of the bridge, the local government has shown no interest in rebuilding it, he said. Residents are suffering because they cannot cross the river. The local government has become a spectator.
The Phugad river is on the border of Raskot and Panchaljharna Rural Municipalities.
