Digital technology influences adolescents' mental and physical well-being in both positive and negative ways, depending on their personality, gender, and how they use it, Czech researchers have revealed.
Presenting findings from 15 studies conducted over the past five years, experts from Brno's Masaryk University emphasized that the impact of digital engagement varies widely, according to a report released by the Czech News Agency on Monday.
Some adolescents watch violent content while others primarily use the internet for education and get information, said team leader David Smahel, adding that it is not just about the screen time that matters, but also about how the technology is used.
The researchers highlighted the importance of parental guidance -- not only in regulating the time young people spend on their devices but also in monitoring what they do with them.
Researchers also revealed gender-based differences in the psychological effects of digital engagement. According to study author David Lacko, increased participation in social gaming was linked to lower levels of depressed mood and loneliness among boys. However, for girls, increased involvement in gaming was associated with heightened feelings of loneliness and depression.
