President Ramchandra Paudel has certified the contentious Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill 2079.
Today, President Paudel signed the bill on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.
The previous House of Representatives and National Assembly enacted and passed the Citizenship Bill and sent it for verification, but then-President Bidya Devi Bhandari returned it twice without verification.
However, when the new mandate arrived and the House of Representatives was in session, several individuals argued that President Paudel should not ratify the bill because it was in a 'dead' state.
The lawmakers of the main opposition party, UML, criticized the ruling coalition meeting's decision to urge the president to certify the citizenship bill.
