Terrorism has once again taken hold in South Asia. No matter how much we denounce Muslim terrorists' brutal, cruel, and despicable attack on the beautiful tourist resort of Pahalgam in Kashmir, India, and the deaths of 26 innocent tourists, it is not enough. Sudip Neupane, a Nepalese tourist, was also killed. Nepal has also suffered from the terrorist assault, since a Nepali visitor to Pahalgam was murdered in the tragedy.
The manner in which Hindus were killed, differentiating between Hindus and non-Hindus, should be seen as an extreme case. For the first time, this attack, which recognized and separated religions, marked the start of a new era of violence and terror. Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, is also known as Mini Switzerland. The Bharatiya Janata Party administration withdrew Jammu and Kashmir's special status under the Indian constitution.
After the Constitution was amended and Article 370 got revoked, terrorist attacks like those in the past became rare in Jammu and Kashmir. However, terrorism has slowly arisen in a new form. The renowned Twin Towers tragedy in New York, the attack in Mumbai, India, and the terrible attack on Israel two years ago are all horrific examples of terrorism. Terrorism is another form of brutality. Terrorism is an attempt to further one's own goals by terrorizing innocent people. Terrorism is crueler than war. In the past, terrorism has taken many forms, including hijacking, hostage-taking, unlawful extortion and occupation, murder, and so on. However, Al-Qaeda's attacks on September 11, 2001, targeting the twin buildings in New York and the world-famous coastline, represented a new type of terrorism. Approximately 3,000 individuals were killed in the incident.
After the amendment to the Constitution itself and the abrogation of Article 370, terrorist incidents like the ones in the past were rarely heard of in Jammu and Kashmir. However, terrorism has gradually emerged in a new way. The famous Twin Towers incident in New York, the attack in Mumbai, India, and the despicable attack on Israel's Gaza Strip two years ago are brutal examples of terrorism. Terrorism is another aspect of cruelty. Terrorism is an attempt to prove one's own interests by terrorizing innocent people. Terrorism is more cruel than war. In the past, terrorism has taken the form of hijacking, hostage-taking, illegal extortion and occupation, murder, etc. However, the airstrikes carried out by Al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001, targeting the twin towers in New York, the world-famous oceanfront, was a new form of terrorism. About three thousand people lost their lives in the attack.
Terrorists targeted Jammu and Kashmir, another tourist destination in India, in 2008 after seizing the iconic Taj Hotel in Mumbai, a city known for its tourism and film industry, and failing to heal the scars of Islamic extremist brutality. Why does such terror happen? Why do individuals resort to such horrible actions? There is no answer to any of the questions we pose. The Pahalgam tragedy is being linked to Hamas' attack on Israel. On October 7, 2023, Hamas demonstrated a horrific demonstration of terror. They encircled young people attending a cultural event, murdering about 1,200 and seizing over 300 prisoners. Palestinians are now bearing the brunt of such terrible acts and brutality against innocent citizens who were simply enjoying themselves unarmed.
Israel, surrounded by Muslim nations on all sides, has targeted Hamas for two years, murdering over 50,000 people. Many people support Hamas' violent efforts, yet millions of innocent Palestinians have died as a result of the conflict. Similarly, no one knows how many people would perish in reaction to the terrorist assault in Pahalgam. India has been the site of several terrorist incidents. Every year, hundreds of people are killed as a result of the conflict between India and Pakistan, as well as the vicious ideology of Muslim extremists. Terrorist incidents are not absent in Pakistan either, they happen frequently. The terrorists there are using Islam against the believers.
The train hijacking and hostage situation in Balochistan a few days ago was the most recent example in this sequence. Wherever there is horror and carnage in Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Bangladesh, Muslims are pitted against Muslims. The Shia-Sunni rivalry continues to this day. However, given that this is the first time terrorists have specifically targeted Hindus, it appears that this occurrence should be viewed from a different perspective.
A few days ago, the anti-Hindu attack in Murshidabad, India's own West Bengal state, also caused outrage in India. Even more than this, the statement by Pakistan Army Chief General Munir on why Muslims are different from Hindus seems to have incited anti-Hindu sentiments.
Following the incident, the Indian government made strong diplomatic actions against Pakistan. All Pakistanis in India have been asked to leave immediately, while Pakistani ambassadors must depart within seven days. India has decided to cut the number of workers at the Pakistani High Commission and block the Attari-Wagah border. India's seriousness is evident after banning all Pakistani visas and sending instructions to depart within 48 hours. It has also stopped the arrangement for the Sindh Water Project, which is the lifeline of the Pakistani people. Since 1960, the Pakistani people have been provided with irrigation and potable water through this river deal.
Against this context, a terrorist incident occurred in Kashmir. Given the gravity of India's response to the strike, an Indo-Pak war or significant action against Pakistan might occur at any time. Terrorists are also targeting Nepalese citizens, thus the Nepalese government must take this seriously. Regardless of the logic or repercussions, individuals who oppose terrorism must band together and have the will to punish such horrible crimes. We condemn the terrorist attack, pay our respects to all those slain in Pahalgam, and hope for the rapid recovery of the injured.
