Following the arrest of Kantipur Media Group chairman Kailash Sirohia, the Nepali media has protested collectively. Protests against attacks on the free press are becoming increasingly common worldwide. Instead of the special editorial, all daily newspapers now run a one-line editorial stating, 'Facts do not change, pen does not bend'.
Himalaya Times, Kantipur, Annapurna, Rajdhani Dainik, and other newspapers have shown their support by publishing editorials and special editions on major occasions. Himalaya Times Daily published news with the headline 'Kantipur Chairman Sirohia arrested from his office: outcome of democracy turning into authoritarianism' on the front page.
Similarly, Samacharpatra, Aarthik Dainik, and The Himalaya Times have joined the mass protest.
Naya Patrika, Nagarik, and Karobar Dainik among some other publications did not join the protest. Similarly, The Kathmandu Post, owned by the Kantipur Media Group, is not joining in the mass protest. While other media focus on mass protests, The Kathmandu Post has not shown solidarity.
Following Sirohia's arrest, the Nepal Media Society and Media Alliance, organizations of media operators, agreed to stage a mass protest.
The arrest of Sirohia has sparked widespread condemnation. Leaders from many parties and media groups have protested. Police entering media houses is deemed inappropriate all across the world. According to experts, such an act would be inappropriate for a state that values freedom of the press.
After Dhanusha District Court issued an arrest order for an investigation into citizenship offenses, police apprehended Sirohia from the Kantipur office in Thapathali on Tuesday evening.
He will be produced in the District Court, Dhanusha.
