The Kathmandu District Court has sentenced cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane to 8 years imprisonment.
The bench of Kathmandu District Court Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal sentenced him to imprisonment for extortion.
The court further directed him to pay Rs 5 lakh in reparation to the victim.
Earlier, the District Court convicted Lamichhane of rape and subjected him to imprisonment of 7 to 10 years. The court determined that Lamichhane took advantage of the victim's financial circumstances, which led her to commit suicide.
With this ruling, Sandeep can now file an appeal at the High Court without facing jail time. There is a legal provision that allows the defendant to appeal to a higher court without being imprisoned if the sentence is less than 6 to 10 years.
