Series Of Quakes, Aftershocks Felt In Bajhang

According to the NEMRC, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 2:40 pm with its epicentre in Bajhang

A series of earthquakes and aftershocks have continued in Bajhang district in Sudurpaschim Province since the 5.3 magnitude quake took place in the district on Tuesday, said the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC), Lainchaur, Kathmandu.

According to the NEMRC, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 2:40 pm with its epicentre in Bajhang. At least 11 earthquakes of over 4 magnitude have taken place in different places of Bajhang as of this morning since Tuesday, said Ram Prasad Ghimire, Director General of the Department of Mines and Geology.

According to the NEMRC, for the second time, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred at 3:06 am with its epicentre in Chainpur, the district headquarters. Similarly, another quake of 4.1 magnitude took place at 3:13 am with its epicentre in Chainpur, the other of 4.1 magnitude took place at 3:45 am with its epicentre in Surma.

Other quakes included a 4.1 magnitude at 4:28 pm with its epicentre in Talkot, an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude at 4:31 pm with its epicentre in Subeda, a 5 magnitude quake at 5:19 pm with its epicentre in Seli, a 5 magnitude quake at 5:38 pm with its epicentre in Damena, a quake of 4.1 magnitude at 12:16 am with its epicentre in Damena, a 4.3 magnitude quake at 12:50 with its epicentre in Talkot and a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 5:43 with its epicentre in Chainpur.

The Centre's geologist Dr Lok Bijaya Adhikari said Nepal is an earthquake prone zone, and earthquakes could take place any time. "There was no earthquake in West Nepal for the past five years. Quakes are occurring there recently," he said.

Earlier last October, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake took place with its epicentre in Doti. Sudurpaschim region would have aftershocks for a few more days, he said.
