Doctors at Narayani Hospital in Birgunj submitted their mass resignation on Tuesday in protest following an assault on a fellow physician and escalating tensions over the incident.
Hospital Spokesperson and Information Officer Dr. Udaynarayan Singh said that 68 doctors submitted their resignation letters to Acting Medical Superintendent Dr. Chitaranjan Shah.
Medical services at the hospital have been severely disrupted since Saturday after 45-year-old Rajkumar Patel, a resident of Birgunj Metropolitan City-25, died while undergoing treatment. Following his death, Patel's family members and relatives accused the attending doctors of medical negligence and allegedly assaulted Dr. Pramod Ram, a medical officer serving in the hospital's emergency department.
Dr. Ram is currently undergoing treatment at the National Trauma Centre in Kathmandu. In response to the assault, doctors at Narayani Hospital have suspended all medical services except emergency care.
The situation further escalated after discussions involving the doctors, the Chief District Officer, and the Chief of Police failed to resolve the dispute, prompting the mass resignation.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Medical Association has announced the suspension of medical services nationwide on Tuesday, with only emergency services remaining operational.
