An Indian transgender couple is living their dream of becoming parents after the birth of their first child, possibly the first case of its kind in the country.

Zahad, a trans man who gave birth to a baby on February 8, has urged the hospital authorities to consider him as the father in the birth records.

The baby was born through a Cesarean Section at the Kozhikode Hospital, Kerala.

The couple has decided not to reveal the sex of the newborn or assign the baby’s gender at birth.

Ziya and Zahad met each other at gatherings of transpersons. Ziya was born a man and changed into a woman, and Zahad was born a woman who transformed into a man. Both of them left their families after becoming aware of their transgender identities.

According to the couple, they have been living together for three years and both decided to halt their ongoing hormonal therapy to conceive a baby.

"Since we started living together, we had dreams of becoming a parent. Though we had made attempts to adopt a child, we felt it was difficult for a trans couple to adopt a child due to the legal complications involved. Then we thought about getting our own child," Zia said.

A team of doctors from the Hospital confirmed that there was no physical challenge in conceiving though both of them were in the process of gender transformation.

Eight months into Zahad’s pregnancy, Ziya shared the news through a social media post.
"We are about to realise my dream of becoming a mother and his dream of becoming a father. An eight-month-old foetus is now in (Zahad's) belly... From what we came to know, this is the first trans man's pregnancy in India..." the post said.

Zahad's family was very happy to hear of his pregnancy and initially told him to continue as a mother. But, he remains firm on the gender transition after the delivery. "Once he delivers the baby, he will continue his journey to become a man," Zia Paval has also said earlier on behalf of Zahad. However, the family has come around to his decision.

Ziya voiced out the constant fear in which the trans community is living. "There are numerous transpeople who want to be a parent. There are many persons for whom the transman pregnancy is possible. But they are not coming forward," Ziya said.
