President Bidya Devi Bhandari today visited the Barahakshetra, the famous religious site in Sunsari district, to observe the Makarsankranti festival.
The Head-of-the-State reached the Barahakshetra this morning on a Nepal Army helicopter on the occasion of the Makar or Maghe Sankranti, according to Sunsari Chief District Officer Indra Dev Yadav. After this, the President is scheduled to visit the holy shrines in Bijayapur of Dharan.
Many devotees throng Barahakshetra that lies along the confluence of Koshi and Koka rivers to take a holy dip on the occasion of the Maghe Sankranti. The religious belief is that one will be absolved of sins by taking a holy bath at the Koka- Kaushiki, the confluence of two rivers in the area on the occasion of the Maghe Sankranti.
A grand fair takes place every year in Barahakshetra on Magh 1, the first day of the month of Magh in the Nepali calendar.
