Armed men abducted dozens of schoolchildren in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, and their fate remains unknown.
Parents of the students and residents of the area estimated that between 35 and 43 pupils were abducted from the central primary school in the village of Musa. They noted that the attack occurred shortly after Nigerian army forces had left the town.
Residents said the gunmen arrived in the town in less than half an hour on motorcycles and carried out the kidnapping of children from a primary school and kindergarten, adding that an infant was among those abducted.
Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has been fighting armed organizations for the past 17 years. These groups have frequently used kidnappings as part of their tactics, most notably the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014.
