The government has lifted the ban on the social network Tiktok.
The meeting of Council of Ministers agreed to allow the usage of Tiktok, on Thursday.
According to Section 3 of the Directive for Managing the Use of Social Networks, 2023, Tiktok must get enlisted with the Ministry for the operation of the social network, and the point of contact of the listed social network must be specified.
Furthermore, the government has imposed conditions such as contributing in tourism marketing, working for digital security and literacy, supporting in public education and IT infrastructure development, and language filtering while delivering content.
On November 13, the then Council of Ministers agreed to shut down Tiktok citing that it led to deterioration in social harmony and infringed social dignity.
Tiktok has repeatedly requested that the prohibition be lifted since the shut down.
Prithvisubba Gurung, the government's spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology, said that the restriction will be lifted after the government's criteria are met.
Minister Gurung added that other social networks must provide a point of contact and may only operate if they are enlisted and are willing to promote tourism, digital security, and literacy.
