In the ongoing policy making conclave, mahasamiti meeting, of the biggest political party, Nepali Congress, a proposal of 'Vedic sanatan Hindu state along with religious freedom' has been presented on Thursday.
The policy conclave going on at Godawari for four days witnessed signatures of 1,063 mahasamiti members in the proposal.
The signature drive was launched by the Sanatan Hindu State Nepal Mega Campaign coordinated by central member Shankar Bhandari.
Bhandari submitted the proposal to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba after informing the mahasamiti meeting about the need and relevance of the agenda.
Although the present constitution has mentioned the country 'a secular state with religious freedoms' with the adoption of federalism, a section in the Nepali Congress has not left the agenda of Hindu state. It had also raised this agenda in the previous mahasamiti meeting held at Trivedidham, Nawalparasi.
Most of the mahasamiti members representing Madhes Province and Sudurpaschim Province raised the issue of Hindu state, giving priority in the ongoing meeting.
Co-convenor of the mega campaign, Lokesh Dhakal viewed, "They were not for any religious conflict but for voicing people's aspiration through the mega campaign."
He further said NC could not breach the aspiration of most of the mahasamiti members. Vedic sanatan Hindu religion is common ideals of all, Dhakal argued.
