“The Nun II” Tops Box Office

The film is a sequel to 2018's "The Nun," the highest grossing entry in the "The Conjuring" Universe

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's horror thriller "The Nun II" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 32.6 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, showed figures from the measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

The film is a sequel to 2018's "The Nun," the highest grossing entry in the "The Conjuring" Universe. "The Conjuring" Universe, centered on a series of supernatural horror films, is the highest grossing horror franchise in history with over 2 billion dollars worldwide.

Directed by Michael Chaves, the film stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons, returning from the first film.

The film holds an approval rating of 45 percent based on 86 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a mediocre "C+" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

"The Nun II" also took in 52.7 million dollars internationally this weekend for a global debut of 85.3 million dollars.

Sony Pictures' action film "The Equalizer 3" fell to No. 2 on its second weekend with 12.1 million dollars for a North American total of 61.9 million dollars through Sunday.

Rounding out the Top 3, Focus Features' romantic comedy film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" earned 10 million dollars for its opening debut.
