Supreme Court Justice Dr. Manoj Sharma has been recommended for the post of Chief Justice. The Constitutional Council meeting held on Thursday recommended his name for the post of Chief Justice.
The Constitutional Council, during its meeting held on Thursday, recommended Dr. Sharma for appointment as the Chief Justice of Nepal.
This recommendation marks a historic development in Nepal’s judicial system, as it is the first instance in which a judge ranked fourth in the seniority order has been proposed for the position of Chief Justice, bypassing the convention of appointing the senior-most judge. Subject to approval by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee, Dr. Sharma will become the 33rd Chief Justice of Nepal.
Dr. Sharma, who was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court on Baisakh 6, 2076 B.S., would be eligible to serve a full six-year tenure as Chief Justice if his appointment is endorsed.
The Constitutional Council selected Dr. Sharma over Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla and senior Supreme Court Justices Kumar Regmi and Hari Phuyal.
