The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Wednesday urged Iran to permanently free jailed peace prize winner Nargis Mohammadi, after Tehran released her for three weeks on medical grounds.
Mohammadi, 52, has been repeatedly tried and jailed for her vocal campaigning against Iran's widespread use of capital punishment and its mandatory dress code for women.
Her lawyer announced Wednesday on social media that she had been released to recuperate "after the removal of a tumour and a bone graft three weeks ago."
Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, primarily for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran. Her children collected the award on her behalf as she was in prison at the time.
"We demand, as we have done before, that she is not only released from prison for 21 days for medical treatment, but released forever," the head of the Nobel committee, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, told AFP.
"It's our hope that the regime and the pressure from the outside world, including the Norwegian Nobel Committee, will result in her release one day," Frydnes said.
He said "her condition is severe, most likely cancer."
"The issue is, of course, that these 21 days are most likely not enough for adequate treatment," he added.
Frydnes said the committee hoped it would "meet her digitally" during her 21-day release, and "sometime in the future... meet and talk to Nargis personally."
