Kathmandu- In a major step toward resolving chronic delays in driver’s license issuance, the Nepal Government has officially begun printing smart driving licenses through the newly introduced Electronic Driving License and Vehicle Registration System (EDLVRSS), effective since Shrawan 1.
The initiative, led by the Department of Transport Management under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development, aims to clear persistent backlogs and streamline operations, ensuring a faster, more accessible, and service-oriented process for both new applicants and license renewals.
Under the new mechanism, user details uploaded to the EDLVRSS platform are directly transferred to Security Printing for production. Once printed, the cards are dispatched to the respective Transport Management Offices via postal services, eliminating key bottlenecks in the traditional printing and distribution pipeline.
Provincial Implementation
-
Madhesh Province: Leading the initial phase, 3,081 driving licenses have already been printed and mailed to local transport offices for final distribution. Madhesh Province executed a direct contract with Security Printing to manage license production independently under provincial oversight.
-
Lumbini Province: Following suit, the Lumbini Provincial Government finalized its agreement with Security Printing on Friday to initiate its own license production.
-
Other Regions: For provinces that have not yet established direct contracts, temporary arrangements have been coordinated through the Department of Transport Management and Security Printing to ensure services remain uninterrupted despite high demand.
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure stated that delegating printing operations to the provincial level, backed by a central digital system, will establish a reliable framework to deliver licenses efficiently and on schedule.
